Introduction of School

The School of Tourism and Hotel Management (STHM), Dongbei University of Finance & Economics (DUFE) was established in 1995.STHM is one of the leading institutions offering top quality education in Tourism and Hospitality Management in China.

In the course of long-term development and construction, STHM has always adhered to the educational philosophy of "high standards and internationalization". Combined with its own characteristics and advantages, the school has positioned itself as "the cradle of new cultural and tourism elites". With the development mission of "contributing Chinese cultural and tourism wisdom and cultivating outstanding cultural and tourism talents", the school has concentrated its efforts and forged ahead with determination. The school strives to build into China's most distinctive high-level cultural and tourism discipline platform.

STHM prides itself on its international outlook by engaging in extensive academic collaboration with a number of world-renowned tourism and hospitality schools in academic exchange, research and student exchange programs, such as University of Surrey in the UK, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Washington State University, etc. . In addition, STHM has close cooperation with Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China, China Tourism Academy (CTA) and Dalian Tourism Development Commission, and co-established research centers and think tanks. The outputs of these research institutions have served the tourism industry in the form of policy recommendations, consultancy service and tourism development plans, etc.

STHM has strong teaching resources with a reasonable discipline structure and a high degree of international vision. STHM has 18 faculty members, including 2 professors, 9 associate professors. 16 of them have doctoral degree and study abroad experience, their graduated universities from the UK, USA, Canada, Belgium, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Finland. The school is full of confidence in cultivating students with these excellent lecturers.

STHM is one of the first Chinese institutions to admit doctoral students in the field of Tourism and Hospitality Management in 2000. At present, the school has an enrollment of more than 300 students in its academic programs, including above 30 international students.

PhD candidates at STHM will have opportunities to take parts in workshops and conferences, meet internationally respected scholars, work with faculty members on research projects and participate in student exchange programs. STHM now offers two paths to a doctoral degree in Tourism Management and postdoctoral fellowship.

Programs

1. PhD Program

The School of Tourism and Hotel Management offers a full-time program at the PhD level allowing students to focus on tourism and hospitality administration.

Admission Requirements:

Academic background: Applicants must have successfully obtained a Master degree in Tourism Management or relevant areas with an average mark of over 80%;

Language proficiency: Native speaker or IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80.

Two reference letters from previous teachers or supervisors.

 

Degree requirements

In order to obtain a doctoral degree, candidates must:

Successfully complete all required courses and obtain enough credits required by a doctoral degree at DUFE;

Successfully pass and defend the doctoral thesis;

Publish at least one academic paper at SSCI or SCI indexed journal in tourism or hospitality field by the time of final submission of the doctoral thesis. 

2. Combined Master and PhD Program

A combined Master and PhD of Tourism Management offers students who have already enrolled in the postgraduate program in Tourism Management or relevant disciplines at DUFE the opportunity to progress to a PhD program in Tourism Management directly if relevant requirements are met.

Admission Requirements:

Academic performance: Applicants must have successfully enrolled in the postgraduate program in Tourism Management or relevant disciplines at DUFE and the average marks by Year 1 should be above 70%.

Language proficiency: Native speaker or IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80;

 

Students can fill in an application form for the program and if the application is successful, the candidates will need to fulfill the following requirements to progress directly to a PhD program:

Complete all courses and obtain enough credits required to progress directly to a PhD program;

Write a research proposal in tourism or relevant field and pass the oral defense for the proposal;

Participate and make meaningful contribution to a research project under the supervision of a faculty member at STHM

 

Students may not continue in this combined degree program if one of the following occurs:

Fail to pass the required courses or obtain enough credits required to progress directly to a PhD program;

Fail to pass the oral defense for the research proposal;

Fail to pass the overall evaluation assessed by the faculty members.

3. Master Program

The school of Tourism and Hotel Management also offers a full-time program at the master level. The school aims to cultivate cultural and tourism leaders with cultural heritage, management characteristics, innovation consciousness and international pattern. Graduates of this program can work as an administrator in tourism companies. This program focuses on shaping students' skills in problem-solving and logical thinking. Students in this program can take advantage of our close relationship with major international companies to conduct study and research. Students will also have the opportunity to gain an internship in world-renowned hotels and resort companies in Dalian.

This major includes three research orientations: tourism economic management, social and cultural tourism and tourism planning and development.

Language proficiency: Native speaker or IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80;

Admissions Process

Complete your online application form carefully (httt://study.dufe.edu.cn).Make sure all information isboth accurate and authentic. Explain clearly in your own words why you wish to take the course, your relevant experience and why you should be given a place.

We take care to ensure the confidentiality of your application information. All details are held on the University computer system for use only for internal administrative purposes and the compilation of statistics. However, if requested, we may provide information to CSC, local education authorities, police forces and government departments.

Shortlisted applicants who are invited for interview will be notified by email or phone call.

After the application is approved, university will send Admission Notice, JW 202 and other documents. International students need to apply for the study visa (X1or X2) with JW202, Admission Notice, Passport and other documents in Chinese Embassies and Consulates of their country.

Scholarships

DUFE enrolls international students of Chinese Government Scholarship and Liaoning Provincial Government Scholarship. Application date is from January to the end of March every year.
